Project by: Kelli Henderson, Smokey Point Habitat Store Manager

DIY corrugated metal desk

Supplies:

  • Corrugated metal pieces -$5
  • Steel Wool, we used about 8 pieces – $2/package
  • Basic Wood Desk – $20
  • Lumber for trim, we used 8 pieces – $0.25/foot
  • Apple Cider Vinegar – $3.50 at the grocery store

Tools:

  • Nail gun – $10
  • Small package of nails – $2
  • 1/4 in. Die Grinder with cutout wheel – $8

Instructions (estimated labor is 30 minutes):

  1. Cut corrugated metal to size of desk sides using the die grinder
  2. Rust the metal (this is a multi-day process) – First, soak the steel wool in apple cider vinegar for 2-3 days. Then, place the soaked steel wool on the metal in several areas. Let it sit for 2-3 days.
  3. Use a nail gun to attach the metal to the front of the desk legs
  4. Cut lumber to the length of desk and sides and nail it to the desk to trim it out – we placed trim over all areas that the metal was attached and across the bottom of the desk.

You’re done!
