After volunteering for the last four years with Habitat for Humanity of Greater Green Bay, Shelby had experienced what Habitat could offer volunteers, families, and communities across the country. Hawaii, New Mexico, and South Carolina are just a few states that she has served in through the Habitat for Humanities Collegiate Challenge program.

“Being able to serve and help families build their homes has been a life-changing experience”.

After graduating from the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay, she decided to look into AmeriCorps for service opportunities.

“I wasn’t ready for my time with Habitat for Humanity to be over, especially during a pandemic, serving with AmeriCorps seemed like the perfect next step for me”

In August, Shelby moved to Seattle, Washington from her small hometown of Pardeeville, Wisconsin. Here, she will be serving as a Resource Development Coordinator – AmeriCorps VISTA, where she will help develop the Gifts In-Kind program at Habitat for Humanity of Snohomish County.

“I’ve always wanted to work for Habitat for Humanity in some capacity, and this position allows me to network and secure funding for the organization’s next build project.”

During this year of service, she hopes to gain knowledge about how nonprofits work and use that in her subsequent endeavors.

In the future, Shelby hopes to continue volunteering with Habitat for Humanity, and be an advocate for decent, affordable housing.
